What is the difference between an ASME and a PED safety valve?

They are two sets of rules. ASME is the American Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: the capacity of the valve is certified by the National Board and the valve carries the UV stamp. The PED is the European Pressure Equipment Directive: the valve gets a CE marking, usually based on ISO 4126-1. Inside the European Union the CE marking is mandatory; ASME comes on top when the vessel is built to ASME or the specification asks for it. The Farris 2600, 3800 and 4200 are supplied with both.

What does the UV stamp on a safety valve mean?

The UV stamp is the ASME certification mark for pressure relief valves on Section VIII pressure vessels. It confirms that the manufacturer is certified by ASME, that the design has been tested and that the relieving capacity is certified by the National Board. For Section I steam boilers the equivalent is the V stamp.

Can a Farris 2600 replace an existing API 526 valve?

In most cases, yes. API 526 fixes the orifices, the flange sizes and ratings and the centre-to-face dimensions, so a 2600 with the same orifice and flanges fits the existing piping. We check set pressure, capacity, back pressure and materials again from the nameplate or the datasheet of the current valve.

What do you need for a Farris quotation?

For a replacement the type number on the nameplate is enough, for example 26KA10L-120, together with the set pressure. For a new valve: the medium and its state, the set pressure, the required capacity or the governing scenario, the operating pressure and temperature, the back pressure, the connection sizes and the required certificates (ASME, PED or both).

ASME safety valves with UV stamp

Farris builds its safety valves to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The relieving capacity is certified by the National Board and the valves carry the ASME certification mark: the UV stamp for pressure vessels (Section VIII and XIII) and the V stamp for steam boilers (Section I).

An ASME safety valve is needed when the vessel itself is built to ASME, when the plant owner’s specification asks for it, or when a skid or machine is destined for a country that requires ASME. For installations in the European Union the CE marking under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) remains mandatory. The 2600, 3800 and 4200 series are supplied with both, ASME certified and CE marked, so one valve meets the American and the European requirement.

The 2600 also follows API 526. That standard fixes the orifices, the flange sizes and the centre-to-face dimensions, so a 2600 fits in place of an existing API 526 valve.

Which series for which duty

Farris 2600: the spring-loaded process valve to ASME Section VIII and API 526, orifices D to T, conventional or with BalanSeal bellows for variable back pressure.
Farris 3800: pilot operated, for operating pressures close to set pressure, high back pressure and large capacities.
Farris 2700: compact valve from 1/2” to 1-1/2” with threaded, flanged or socket weld connections, ASME Section VIII and XIII and ISO 4126-1.
Farris 2400: small valve with a bubble-tight soft seat for processes that run close to set pressure.
Farris 4200: boiler safety valve for steam to ASME Section I and VIII.
