Eductors use the energy of a pressurised motive fluid, a liquid, gas or steam, to pump, mix or heat another fluid. They have no moving parts, need no lubrication or direct power, and are suited to hazardous areas without explosion-proofing. Ritec supplies Jacoby-Tarbox eductors and sizes them per application.
In-line eductors
In-line eductors are installed in a pipeline for pumping liquids or gases, blending, and direct steam heating. They are built to ASME requirements, with NPT or flanged connections and wrench flats that protect the unit during installation.
Tank liquid agitators (TLA)
The TLA is an eductor designed for in-tank mixing. Tank liquid recirculated by an external pump, or a secondary liquid or gas, drives the nozzle; the jet entrains the tank contents and mixes them. Cast units range from 3/8” to 3”, in bronze, 316 stainless steel or carbon steel. Jacoby-Tarbox can simulate a tank with its AccuBlend CFD program to confirm the number of TLAs and the turnover time.

- How does an eductor work?
- A pressurised motive fluid enters the nozzle and is accelerated. The high-velocity jet lowers the pressure in the suction chamber and pulls in the suction fluid. In the diffuser the mixture slows down again and the velocity is converted back into pressure at the discharge. The nozzle converges for a liquid motive and expands for gas or steam.
- What is the difference between an in-line eductor and a TLA?
- An in-line eductor sits in a process line and pumps, mixes or heats the fluids passing through it. A tank liquid agitator (TLA) is an eductor mounted inside the tank: the jet entrains the tank contents and the discharge stream keeps the whole tank moving, which removes stratification in pH, temperature and solids.
- What do you need to select an eductor?
- The goal (mixing, suspending solids, pumping, heating), the motive fluid and its pressure and flow, the suction fluid or tank contents with their properties, the required discharge pressure, and for tank mixing the tank dimensions and the turnover time you need.
