BS&B Type IPD chemical isolation system

Active chemical isolation: on detection of an explosion, a suppressant cannon injects sodium bicarbonate into the connected duct or pipe, quenching the flame front before it reaches the next vessel.

Not every duct can take a mechanical isolation valve: it may be too large, too congested or carry a flow that a valve would disturb. Chemical isolation solves the problem without a moving part in the duct. A Type IPD Cannon is mounted on the duct wall; when the Triplex sensor on the protected vessel detects the onset of an explosion, the cannon discharges a cloud of sodium bicarbonate into the duct within milliseconds, ahead of the flame front. The flame is extinguished in the powder cloud and never reaches the connected equipment.

The system uses the same components as Type IPD explosion suppression: cannons in 5 to 60 lb modules, the Triplex sensor, a system monitor providing intrinsically safe power and field electronics. It is FM approved for combustible dust protection and ATEX/IECEx certified, and a single system monitor can run suppression on the vessel and isolation on its ducts together.

Selection data we need

Duct sizes and layout with distances, the protected vessel and its explosion protection, dust explosion data (Kst, Pmax), process flow and temperature, and hazardous area classification.

  • Ducting between dust collectors and process equipment
  • Large ducts where mechanical valves are impractical
