Reliance cast iron and steel water columns and standpipes

Boiler water columns that carry one or two gage glasses and float or probe type high/low alarms and low water cut-outs: cast iron W0250 to 250 psi, steel columns to 3000 psi (200 bar), SP Series direct-to-drum standpipes, Retropak PC probe conversion.

A water column is a vertical chamber piped to the boiler drum. It has three purposes: it carries one or two water gage glasses, it can hold float type high and low alarms, and with probes it provides alarms and low water cut-out. Reliance introduced the first alarm water column, and its columns are still designed and built to the ASME Boiler Code, with every column, glass and valve hydrotested at 150 percent of design pressure.

The cast iron W0250 serves boilers up to 250 psi. It comes as a float alarm type (FA) or a probe type (EA) with three to six probes for alarms, low water cut-out trips and pump control, and the gage centres and connection positions can be varied to suit the boiler. Steel water columns go up to 3000 psi, and the SP Series standpipes mount gage glasses directly on the drum in a compact assembly.

Existing float type columns, from Reliance or other makers, can be converted with the Retropak PC probe cap. It replaces the top flange with up to six probes, and plug-in relays in the control unit switch alarms, pumps and cut-outs, unaffected by changes in pressure, temperature or water conditions.

Selection data we need

Boiler design pressure and temperature, cast iron or steel column or standpipe, float or probe controls and the required functions (alarms, cut-outs, pump control), steam and water connection type and centres, gage glass and valve connections, drain connection, orientation of the gages around the column, environment and junction box.

Applications

  • Supporting water gage glasses on boiler drums
  • High and low water alarms, low water cut-out and pump control
  • Conversion of float type columns to probe controls (Retropak PC)
