BS&B Type IPD explosion suppression system

Active explosion suppression for dust collectors, dryers, mills and silos: Triplex pressure sensors detect the first milliseconds of a deflagration and Cannons discharge sodium bicarbonate that extinguishes the flame ball inside the vessel. FM approved, ATEX and IECEx.

Explosion suppression stops a dust explosion while it is still small. Instead of letting the pressure build and releasing it through a vent, the Type IPD system detects the very first pressure rise of a deflagration and floods the vessel with suppressant before the flame ball can grow. The equipment is protected, nothing is vented, and from the outside there is often no sign that an event occurred.

Detection. The Triplex Sensor contains three independent pressure sensors. At least two must agree before the system fires, which eliminates false trips from a single faulty sensor, and the sensors are compensated so they work on equipment operating under negative pressure, as dust collectors do.

Suppression. Cannons are selected from standard modules of 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 lb of food compatible sodium bicarbonate, and several are usually mounted on one vessel. When triggered, the pulverised agent is discharged in milliseconds, extinguishing the flame before the pressure exceeds the strength of the vessel.

Control. The System Monitor powers the sensors and cannons at intrinsically safe levels, supervises every circuit, and can also drive Redex, IVE or chemical isolation on the connected ducts so a single system protects the vessel and its neighbours.

Type IPD systems are FM approved for combustible dust protection, with monitoring and firing circuits to FM 3610, CSA 22.2 and EN 50014/50020, and are ATEX and IECEx certified.

Selection data we need

Equipment type, volume and strength (Pred), dust explosion data (Kst, Pmax, MIE), operating pressure and temperature, connected ducting, hazardous area classification and the plant’s control system interface.

Applications

  • Indoor dust collectors where venting is impossible
  • Equipment handling toxic or valuable product that must not be vented
  • Spray dryers, mills, mixers and bucket elevators
  • Food, pharmaceutical, chemical, wood and metal powder industries
